Formula and methodology
Formula: Surface area = surface length × surface width; covered footprint per tile = (tile length + grout gap) × (tile width + grout gap); order tiles = ceil(surface area / covered footprint × (1 + waste/100)); boxes = ceil(order tiles / tiles per box); cost = boxes × price per box.
The grout gap is included in the repeating tile pitch, while the waste allowance is applied afterward to cover cuts and breakage. The result rounds tiles and boxes upward because a purchase cannot contain a fraction of either; use the product box coverage when it is the supplier's primary specification.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Surface length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Surface width — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Tile length — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Tile width — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Grout gap — same length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Cutting and breakage allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Tiles per box — minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Price per box — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Surface length | 5 |
| Surface width | 4 |
| Tile length | 0.3 |
| Tile width | 0.3 |
| Grout gap | 0.003 |
| Cutting and breakage allowance | 10 |
| Tiles per box | 10 |
| Price per box | 25 |
The surface is 20 square units; with the stated grid and 10% allowance, order 240 tiles, 24 boxes, and a planning cost of 600 currency units.
Assumptions and limits
- The surface and each tile are represented as rectangles measured in one consistent length unit.
- The entered grout gap is the repeating gap added to both tile directions; edge trims and movement joints are not modeled.
- Tiles are laid in a regular grid without a diagonal, herringbone, border, or other pattern premium.
- Waste is an explicit planning allowance and may need to be higher for complex layouts or repairs.
- Tiles per box and price per box describe the product selected by the visitor and are not inferred from a country or retailer.
- The result estimates material quantity only; substrate preparation, adhesive, grout, sealing, labor, and code requirements are excluded.
