Formula and methodology
Formula: Mortar volume = area×thickness/1000; base mass = volume×dry density; order mass = base mass×(1+waste/100); bags = ceiling(order mass ÷ bag mass).
The result is based on a stated average bed thickness and density rather than pretending that one coverage number fits every trowel, tile, substrate, or product. The selected mortar manufacturer remains the source for allowable thickness, coverage, mixing, and installation limits.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Tiled area — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Average mortar-bed thickness — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Dry mortar density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Extra allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Bag mass — kg/bag; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Tiled area | 20 |
| Average mortar-bed thickness | 6 |
| Dry mortar density | 1600 |
| Extra allowance | 10 |
| Bag mass | 25 |
The geometric mortar volume is 0.12 m³ and base mass is 192 kg; with 10% allowance, order 211.2 kg or 9 bags of 25 kg.
Assumptions and limits
- Area is measured in square meters, thickness in millimeters, and the entered density describes the dry material used for purchasing arithmetic.
- The bed is represented by a uniform average thickness; ridges, substrate flatness, tile backs, and transfer efficiency can change actual use.
- Tile type, trowel notch, bond coat, cure, substrate preparation, movement joints, product instructions, and local installation practice are not modeled.
