Formula and methodology
Formula: Tax = sum of each band’s taxable width × its marginal rate; effective rate = tax ÷ income × 100.
The calculator applies the entered rates to successive slices of income. It does not apply the highest rate to the whole amount. Thresholds and rates are deliberately user-entered so a visitor can model a documented schedule from any country, year, filing status, or classroom example without the page silently choosing a jurisdiction.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Taxable income — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000000
- End of first band — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000000
- First marginal rate — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- End of second band — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000000
- Second marginal rate — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- End of third band — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000000
- Third marginal rate — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Rate above third band — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Taxable income | 85000 |
| End of first band | 12000 |
| First marginal rate | 10 |
| End of second band | 50000 |
| Second marginal rate | 20 |
| End of third band | 100000 |
| Third marginal rate | 30 |
| Rate above third band | 40 |
Estimated tax = 19,300; effective rate ≈ 22.706%; income after tax = 65,700; marginal rate = 30%.
Assumptions and limits
- The thresholds are upper bounds for the first three bands and must be strictly increasing.
- The four rates are marginal percentages applied only to the amount inside their corresponding band.
- Income is treated as taxable income after any deductions the visitor intends to apply elsewhere; the page does not calculate allowances or credits.
- The result excludes benefits, rebates, payroll charges, local surcharges, minimum taxes, filing rules, and tax rounding.
- A zero-income scenario returns zero tax and zero effective rate.
- This is a planning and learning worksheet, not a filing calculation or legal conclusion.
