Formula and methodology
Formula: Full cylindrical volume = π(d/2)²L; filled volume = full volume×fill percentage/100; liters = cubic meters×1,000.
The tool treats the tank as a right circular cylinder and applies the entered fill percentage to its geometric capacity. It works for a vertical tank or a horizontal tank only when the percentage represents a volume fraction; it does not calculate the changing liquid height of a horizontal partially filled cylinder.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Tank inside diameter — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Tank length or height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Fill percentage — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Tank inside diameter | 2 |
| Tank length or height | 5 |
| Fill percentage | 80 |
Full capacity is about 15.708 m³ or 15,708 L; at 80% the filled volume is about 12.566 m³ or 12,566 L.
Assumptions and limits
- The tank is a right circular cylinder with an entered inside diameter and axial length or height.
- Fill percentage is a fraction of total volume, not automatically a liquid-height percentage for a horizontal tank.
- Wall thickness, fittings, head shape, usable freeboard, fluid density, pressure rating, overflow, and storage regulations are not modeled.
