Formula and methodology
Formula: Synodic period S = 1 / |1/P₁ − 1/P₂|.
The synodic period is the repeat time of the relative orbital phase in a circular, coplanar approximation. It is not automatically an ephemeris prediction for elliptical, inclined, or perturbed orbits.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Orbital period 1 — days; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Orbital period 2 — days; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Orbital period 1 | 224.701 |
| Orbital period 2 | 365.256 |
Synodic period ≈ 583.92 days, or 1.599 years.
Assumptions and limits
- Both periods are positive and use the same time unit; the periods are unequal so relative angular speed is nonzero.
- The two bodies move uniformly in circular, coplanar orbits with a fixed observer relationship.
- Orbital eccentricity, inclination, perturbations, resonance effects, and calendar date conversion are not modeled.
