Formula and methodology
Formula: Cube: SA=6s² and V=s³; sphere: SA=4πr² and V=4πr³/3; cylinder: SA=2πr²+2πrh and V=πr²h; surface-area-to-volume ratio=SA÷V.
The ratio compares exposed surface with enclosed volume for one selected ideal shape. The shape selector changes the model, while the dimensions remain visible so a visitor can see which inputs are active. A ratio is not a heat-transfer coefficient, biological scaling law, or design verdict; material, orientation, openings, and boundary conditions may matter in real objects.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Shape model — 3 choices
- Side or radius — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Cylinder height (ignored for cube or sphere) — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Shape model | cube |
| Side or radius | 4 |
| Cylinder height (ignored for cube or sphere) | 10 |
For a cube of side 4, surface area = 96 square units, volume = 64 cubic units, and SA/V = 1.5 per length unit.
Assumptions and limits
- The selected shape is an ideal cube, sphere, or right circular cylinder.
- All dimensions use the same length unit, so the ratio has inverse-length units.
- The cylinder height is used only for the cylinder branch; it is ignored for cube and sphere branches.
- The surfaces are closed and have no openings, wall thickness, roughness, or attachments.
- The result does not model heat, mass transfer, strength, packing, or biological behavior.
- Positive dimensions are required and the ratio is mathematical rather than a universal design threshold.
