Formula and methodology
Formula: Total distance = v·t + v²/(2a), after converting speed to m/s; the first term is reaction distance and the second is braking distance.
Stopping distance has two parts: distance traveled while a person recognizes a hazard and reacts, plus distance traveled while the vehicle decelerates. Actual stopping performance depends on tires, surface, grade, braking system, weather, load, and driver behavior.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Assumptions and limits
- The model treats speed as constant during the reaction interval and uses constant deceleration during braking.
- The calculation is for a level-road estimate with no grade, aerodynamic model, or brake-system delay beyond the entered reaction time.
