Formula and methodology
Formula: Stem = floor(value/leaf unit); leaf = value − stem×leaf unit; values sharing a stem are listed in sorted leaf order.
A stem-and-leaf display groups values while preserving every entered observation. The leaf unit controls the place represented by one leaf; for integer tens and ones, use a leaf unit of 1.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Data values
- Leaf unit represented by one leaf — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Data values | 12, 14, 15, 17, 21, 22, 24, 28 |
| Leaf unit represented by one leaf | 10 |
The stems are 1 | 2 4 5 7 and 2 | 1 2 4 8.
Assumptions and limits
- Values use one numeric scale and are finite; the chosen leaf unit is positive.
- Stems use mathematical flooring, which keeps negative values ordered correctly but may require careful reading around zero.
- This is a compact text display, not a substitute for a chart when the dataset is very large or highly dense.
