Formula and methodology
Formula: Average pace = target time ÷ target distance; full split time = average pace × split length; full splits = floor(target distance ÷ split length); remainder distance = target distance − (full splits × split length); remainder time = average pace × remainder distance.
A split schedule turns one finish goal into repeatable checkpoints. This calculator keeps the distance unit visible, reports the time for each full split, and handles a final partial split instead of silently rounding the course.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Target distance — selected unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Distance unit — 3 choices
- Target finish time — minutes; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Split length — same as target; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Target distance | 10 |
| Distance unit | km |
| Target finish time | 50 |
| Split length | 1 |
A 10 km target in 50 minutes gives a 5.00 minute/km pace, 10 full 1 km splits, and 5.00 minutes per full split with no remainder.
Assumptions and limits
- The target distance and split length use the same unit selected on the page.
- The target is modeled as an even-pace plan; it does not prescribe a positive or negative split strategy.
- The final partial split is calculated linearly from the same average pace.
- Course measurement, hills, wind, turns, pacing skill, and aid stations can change real split times.
- The result is a planning schedule and not a prediction of race performance or a training prescription.
- Use the event's official course markers when comparing the plan with recorded splits.
