Formula and methodology
Formula: RPM = 12×surface speed/(π×tool diameter); feed rate = RPM×flutes×chip load.
The calculator exposes the common surface-speed relationship and the corresponding chip-load feed estimate. It does not choose a safe surface speed, tool, material, coolant, depth of cut, machine limit, or workholding method.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Surface speed — ft/min; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Tool diameter — in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Number of flutes — minimum 1; maximum 100
- Chip load per tooth — in/tooth; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Surface speed | 300 |
| Tool diameter | 0.5 |
| Number of flutes | 2 |
| Chip load per tooth | 0.003 |
RPM ≈ 2,291.831 and feed rate ≈ 13.751 in/min.
Assumptions and limits
- Surface speed is entered in feet per minute and tool diameter in inches, so the factor 12 converts feet to inches.
- The cutter is represented by one diameter and a constant chip load per tooth for a basic milling estimate.
- Manufacturer data, machine rigidity, cutter material, engagement, coolant, vibration, guarding, and operator safety are outside the arithmetic.
