Formula and methodology
Formula: N = ceil((clear width − maximum gap)/(spindle width + maximum gap)), bounded to at least one; equal gap = (clear width − N×spindle width)/(N+1).
The calculator treats the clear run as one span containing N spindles and N+1 equal end-to-end gaps. It increases the spindle count until the resulting gap is no larger than the visitor's entered planning limit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Clear run between end posts — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Spindle width — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Maximum planning gap — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Clear run between end posts | 1000 |
| Spindle width | 40 |
| Maximum planning gap | 100 |
Seven 40 mm spindles leave eight equal gaps of 90 mm across a 1,000 mm run.
Assumptions and limits
- All dimensions use millimetres and the run is straight with equal spindle widths.
- There is one gap before the first spindle, one after the last, and one between each pair.
- The maximum gap is a user-entered planning value; no country, building code, occupancy rule, or inspection approval is inferred.
- Posts, handrail geometry, fixings, baluster strength, openings outside this run, and installation tolerances are excluded.
