Formula and methodology
Formula: Specific gravity = material density ÷ reference density; material mass = material density × sample volume; reference mass = reference density × sample volume.
Specific gravity is a dimensionless density ratio. Water is a common reference for liquids and solids, but the reference is kept as an input so the page does not silently assume a temperature, substance, or unit convention. The comparison-volume outputs show how the same volume would differ in mass under the two densities.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Material density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Reference density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Comparison volume — m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Material density | 850 |
| Reference density | 1000 |
| Comparison volume | 0.02 |
A material at 850 kg/m³ against a 1,000 kg/m³ reference has specific gravity 0.85; 0.02 m³ would have masses 17 kg and 20 kg respectively.
Assumptions and limits
- Material and reference densities use the same mass and volume units before division.
- The reference density is supplied explicitly; water near 4 °C is a common but not universal reference.
- Densities are treated as constant over the stated comparison and no temperature correction is inferred.
- The sample volume is a comparison volume, not a measured container capacity or displacement test.
- Specific gravity is dimensionless and does not by itself identify composition, purity, buoyancy safety, or flow behavior.
