Formula and methodology
Formula: Spearman rho = Pearson correlation of the average ranks of X and Y.
Spearman's rho measures monotonic association after replacing each variable with its rank. This implementation assigns tied observations their average rank and then applies the ordinary Pearson correlation to the rank vectors.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- X values — Enter 2-1,000 paired numbers.
- Y values — Enter the same number of paired values.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| X values | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Y values | 4, 1, 3, 2 |
Spearman rank correlation is -0.4.
Assumptions and limits
- The two lists contain equal-length finite paired observations.
- Ties receive average ranks and a constant rank vector is rejected because correlation is undefined.
- The result describes monotonic association and does not establish causation.
