Formula and methodology
Formula: Gross volume = internal width × internal height × internal depth ÷ 1,000 litres; net acoustic volume = gross volume − driver displacement − port displacement − bracing displacement.
Speaker enclosure specifications distinguish gross internal volume from net acoustic volume. This calculator uses internal dimensions and subtracts the displacements the builder enters, so a product specification or driver data sheet can be carried into the arithmetic without pretending that one enclosure volume fits every driver.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Internal width — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Internal height — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Internal depth — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Total driver displacement — L; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Port displacement — L; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Bracing and hardware displacement — L; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Internal width | 60 |
| Internal height | 40 |
| Internal depth | 30 |
| Total driver displacement | 3 |
| Port displacement | 0 |
| Bracing and hardware displacement | 1 |
The gross internal volume is 72 L and the estimated net acoustic volume is 68 L, or about 2.402 cubic feet.
Assumptions and limits
- All three dimensions are internal rectangular dimensions in centimetres.
- One litre equals 1,000 cubic centimetres and one cubic foot is approximately 28.3168466 litres.
- Driver, port, bracing, and hardware displacement inputs are already expressed as total litres.
- The enclosure is treated as a rectangular volume; tapers, rounded corners, leaks, damping material, and irregular braces are not inferred.
- A positive net volume does not select a sealed or vented alignment, tune a port, or guarantee a driver’s response.
- Use the driver manufacturer’s enclosure data and safe construction practices before building or operating an enclosure.
