Formula and methodology
Formula: wavelength λ = v/f; period T = 1/f.
A sound wave's wavelength is the distance between repeating points such as adjacent compressions. Dividing propagation speed by frequency gives wavelength, while the reciprocal of frequency gives the period. The speed belongs to the medium and conditions; it is not determined by frequency alone.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Sound speed — m/s; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Frequency — Hz; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Sound speed | 343 |
| Frequency | 440 |
Wavelength ≈ 0.7795 m and period ≈ 2.273 ms.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered speed and frequency describe the same medium and steady wave.
- The model treats the sound as a plane traveling wave and does not adjust for room geometry, dispersion, temperature gradients, or reflections.
- Frequency is positive and expressed in hertz so the returned period is in seconds.
