Formula and methodology
Formula: Interest = principal x annualRate / 100 x years; final balance = principal + interest.
Simple interest grows linearly with the time period because previous interest never earns further interest. The final balance includes the original principal. This is not an amortizing loan payment model, and the yearly fraction is supplied by the user rather than inferred from dates.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Original principal — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Annual simple interest rate — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Interest period — years; Fractional years are used exactly. Enter 0.5 for half a year; no calendar day-count basis is selected.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Original principal | 10000 |
| Annual simple interest rate | 5 |
| Interest period | 2.5 |
Final balance: 11250.00; simple interest: 1250.00.
Assumptions and limits
- One constant annual simple rate applies only to the original principal, with no compounding, interim payments, or additional deposits.
- Fractional years are used as entered, up to 100 years; no actual/365, actual/360, or other day-count convention is implied.
- Use one consistent currency. Fees, tax, inflation, and live lending or savings rates are excluded.
