Formula and methodology
Formula: For a nonzero value x and n significant figures, retain n digits beginning with the first nonzero digit and round the discarded tail at the final retained place; the scientific-notation form is x rounded to n significant digits.
Significant figures communicate the precision of a measured or reported quantity, not just the number of characters. The result is shown with JavaScript's decimal significant-digit formatter and the page keeps the input and requested precision explicit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Value — minimum -1000000000000; maximum 1000000000000
- Significant figures — minimum 1; maximum 15
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value | 12345.678 |
| Significant figures | 4 |
12345.678 rounded to 4 significant figures is 1.235e+4 (12,350 in ordinary notation).
Assumptions and limits
- The input is treated as a finite decimal value; the calculator does not infer measurement uncertainty from the number alone.
- Rounding is performed once at the final requested precision rather than repeatedly rounding intermediate values.
- A displayed trailing zero can be meaningful in scientific notation even when ordinary decimal notation would hide it.
