Formula and methodology
Formula: At ISO 100, EV₁₀₀ = log₂(N²/t); with ISO adjustment, t = N² ÷ [2^EV₁₀₀ × (ISO/100)].
Exposure value groups aperture and shutter-speed combinations that produce the same exposure under the same scene brightness. Increasing ISO reduces the required shutter time in this simplified model, while real cameras also impose metering, lens, sensor, and motion limits.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Aperture f-number — f-number; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- ISO — ISO; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Scene exposure value at ISO 100 — EV100; minimum -20; maximum 40
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Aperture f-number | 4 |
| ISO | 100 |
| Scene exposure value at ISO 100 | 12 |
At f/4, ISO 100, and EV100 12, the ideal shutter time is 1/256 s (0.00390625 s).
Assumptions and limits
- The entered EV is a scene value referenced to ISO 100 and the lens aperture is represented by its f-number.
- The model targets equivalent exposure and does not predict motion blur, depth of field, sensor noise, or dynamic range.
- Camera metering and manufacturer-specific exposure behavior can differ from this idealized relationship.
