Formula and methodology
Formula: Volume = flow rate × duration; heating energy = mass × 4,186 J/(kg·°C) × temperature rise ÷ efficiency; mass is approximated as volume in litres; total cost = water volume cost + heating energy cost.
This page separates the water bill from the energy used to raise the water temperature. It uses one kilogram per litre and a standard liquid-water heat-capacity approximation, so the prices and temperatures remain local inputs rather than an assumed US tariff or climate.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Shower flow rate — L/min; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Shower duration — min; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Incoming water temperature — °C; minimum -50; maximum 100
- Shower water temperature — °C; minimum -50; maximum 150
- Heating efficiency — %; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Water and wastewater price — currency/m³; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Energy price — currency/kWh; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Shower flow rate | 8 |
| Shower duration | 8 |
| Incoming water temperature | 15 |
| Shower water temperature | 40 |
| Heating efficiency | 90 |
| Water and wastewater price | 3 |
| Energy price | 0.15 |
The shower uses 64 L, requires about 2.067 kWh of supplied heating energy, and costs about 0.502 currency units using the entered prices.
Assumptions and limits
- Flow rate is steady and the water volume is flow multiplied by time.
- One litre of water is approximated as one kilogram for the energy estimate.
- The heat capacity of liquid water is fixed at 4,186 J/(kg·°C).
- The outlet temperature must not be below the inlet temperature in this heating-only model.
- Heater efficiency is the fraction of supplied energy delivered to the water; distribution and standby losses are not separately modeled.
- Water price includes any local water and wastewater charge the visitor chooses to include.
- The result is a planning estimate, not a utility bill, plumbing specification, scald-prevention recommendation, or equipment efficiency certification.
