Formula and methodology
Formula: Rows = eyelet pairs − 1; one-row crossing length is √(width² + vertical spacing²) for criss-cross or width for straight-bar; estimated thread path = 2 × rows × crossing length + 2 × vertical spacing; add the total knot allowance.
A lace must cover the path through the eyelets and still leave enough at both ends to tie. This planner exposes the geometric assumptions and lets the visitor choose a criss-cross or straight-bar path instead of returning a lookup-table length that may not fit a different shoe.

Assumptions and limits
- Eyelet pairs are counted on one shoe, not as the total number of holes on both shoes.
- Across-shoe width and vertical spacing are measured between corresponding eyelet centres in one unit.
- The criss-cross model treats each row transition as a diagonal; the straight-bar model treats it as a horizontal crossing.
- The two end runs are represented by twice the vertical spacing, while the visitor supplies the total tying allowance separately.
- Tongue height, hooks, thick laces, skipped eyelets, unusual patterns, and variable spacing can change the real length.
- The output is a buying and planning estimate, not a manufacturer-specific size guarantee.
- Measure one shoe in the lacing pattern that will actually be used and round up to a stocked length when necessary.
