Formula and methodology
Formula: I = Iₛ[exp(V/(nVₜ))−1]; Vₜ = kT/q.
The Shockley equation gives a compact exponential current-voltage model for a p-n junction and keeps the thermal-voltage and ideality assumptions visible.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Reverse saturation current — A; minimum 1.0E-30; maximum 1000000
- Diode voltage — V; minimum -5; maximum 2
- Ideality factor — minimum 0.1; maximum 10
- Junction temperature — °C; minimum -273.14; maximum 10000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Reverse saturation current | 1.0E-12 |
| Diode voltage | 0.6 |
| Ideality factor | 1 |
| Junction temperature | 25 |
The idealized current is about 0.0139 A and thermal voltage is about 25.7 mV.
Assumptions and limits
- The junction follows the idealized Shockley model outside breakdown and high-current series-resistance effects.
- Saturation current and ideality factor describe the selected device and operating region; they are not identified from the voltage alone.
- Temperature is converted to kelvins, and leakage, recombination, breakdown, heating, and datasheet tolerances are not modeled.
