Formula and methodology
Formula: Gross wall area = length×height; net area = gross−openings; board coverage = usable face width×board length; boards = ceiling(net area×(1+waste/100) ÷ board coverage).
The usable face width is intentional: it lets the visitor account for the overlap or reveal stated by the selected board instead of using its nominal width blindly. The result is a first-pass board count and does not hide trim, corners, pattern matching, or layout direction.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Wall length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Wall height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Opening area — m²; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Usable board face width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Board length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Waste allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Wall length | 6 |
| Wall height | 2.4 |
| Opening area | 2 |
| Usable board face width | 0.14 |
| Board length | 4.8 |
| Waste allowance | 10 |
Net wall area is 12.4 m²; order area is 13.64 m²; at 0.672 m² usable coverage per board, order 21 boards.
Assumptions and limits
- The wall is a rectangle and openings are entered as one combined area that cannot exceed the gross wall area.
- Usable board face width already reflects the product's installed reveal or overlap, and each board is treated as a rectangle of that usable width and length.
- Corners, returns, gables, trim, electrical cutouts, starter courses, board defects, layout, and local installation guidance are not modeled.
