Formula and methodology
Formula: Shear-wave velocity vₛ = √(G/ρ), with shear modulus G converted from GPa to Pa.
The calculator connects an elastic property and an inertial property to a shear-wave speed. It keeps the travel-time scenario separate from any claim about a particular field measurement or structural survey.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Shear modulus — GPa; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Material density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000000
- Travel distance — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Shear modulus | 30 |
| Material density | 2500 |
| Travel distance | 100 |
A 30 GPa shear modulus and 2,500 kg/m³ density give vₛ ≈ 3,464.10 m/s; 100 m takes about 0.02887 s.
Assumptions and limits
- The material is homogeneous, isotropic, and represented by a positive shear modulus and density.
- The wave is treated as a simple bulk shear wave with no dispersion or attenuation.
- The supplied distance is a straight travel path in metres.
- Layering, boundaries, fluid saturation, temperature, cracks, and instrument interpretation are not modeled.
