Formula and methodology
Formula: Engineering shear strain gamma = lateral displacement/height; small-angle distortion = arctan(gamma); elastic shear stress tau = G gamma.
Shear strain describes angular distortion, while the linear elastic relation turns that strain into shear stress when a shear modulus is supplied. The angle output helps distinguish a dimensionless strain from the geometric distortion angle.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Lateral shear displacement — mm; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Original layer height — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Shear modulus — MPa; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Lateral shear displacement | 2 |
| Original layer height | 100 |
| Shear modulus | 80000 |
Shear strain = 0.02; distortion angle ≈ 1.146°; elastic shear stress = 1,600 MPa.
Assumptions and limits
- Displacement and height use the same length unit, the height is positive, and the shear modulus is in MPa.
- The deformation is small and the material is homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic.
- Plasticity, large-rotation kinematics, rate effects, temperature, cracking, and boundary-condition details are not modeled.
