Formula and methodology
Formula: Design torque=applied torque×safety factor; required solid diameter=(16×design torque×1000/(π×allowable shear stress))^(1/3); torsional shear stress=16×design torque×1000/(π×candidate diameter³).
The calculator applies the elastic torsion relation for a solid circular shaft and returns both a required diameter estimate and a check of the visitor’s candidate diameter. Torque is converted from N·m to N·mm so the stress and diameter units remain MPa and mm.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Applied torque — N·m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Allowable shear stress — MPa; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Safety factor — minimum 1; maximum 1000
- Candidate solid shaft diameter — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Applied torque | 100 |
| Allowable shear stress | 60 |
| Safety factor | 2 |
| Candidate solid shaft diameter | 35 |
Design torque = 200 N·m; required diameter ≈ 25.69 mm; candidate stress ≈ 24.95 MPa; candidate torque capacity at the safety factor ≈ 412.9 N·m.
Assumptions and limits
- The shaft is solid, circular, prismatic, and loaded by a torque about its longitudinal axis.
- The allowable shear stress and safety factor are user-supplied design inputs; material, code, fatigue, keyways, shoulders, corrosion, and manufacturing tolerances are not inferred.
- The model uses the maximum elastic torsional shear relation and does not check bending, combined stress, deflection, vibration, or connection capacity.
- The result is a preliminary sizing calculation, not an approval to manufacture or operate a shaft.
