Formula and methodology
Formula: Cfinal = Cinitial × f^n; cumulative dilution factor = f^n, where f is the retained fraction per step.
The calculator makes the per-transfer fraction and number of repetitions visible instead of asking visitors to remember a power of ten.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Initial concentration — concentration; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Retained fraction per step — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1
- Number of dilution steps — minimum 1; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial concentration | 10 |
| Retained fraction per step | 0.1 |
| Number of dilution steps | 3 |
Cumulative retained fraction = 0.001 and final concentration = 0.01 concentration units.
Assumptions and limits
- Every transfer uses the same retained fraction and mixing is complete before the next transfer.
- The input concentration and output concentration use the same unit.
- Pipette error, carryover, adsorption, evaporation, sterility, and sample-specific laboratory procedure are not modeled.
