Formula and methodology
Formula: r = annualRate / 1200; n = 12 x years; FV = startingBalance x (1 + r)^n + monthlyContribution x ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r. At zero rate, FV = startingBalance + monthlyContribution x n.
Each month's existing balance earns interest before the new deposit arrives. The last deposit earns no interest within the selected horizon. Interest is the final balance minus the starting savings and all new deposits; the table also includes a partial final year.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Starting savings — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Monthly-end deposit — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Nominal annual interest rate — %; Not an effective annual yield: the monthly rate is this percentage / 1200.; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Saving horizon — years; Whole months only; 0.5 years is 6 monthly deposits. Zero is allowed.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Starting savings | 5000 |
| Monthly-end deposit | 500 |
| Nominal annual interest rate | 6 |
| Saving horizon | 10 |
Projected balance: 91036.66; new contributions: 60000.00; interest: 26036.66.
Assumptions and limits
- Deposits occur at monthly-end and interest compounds monthly using a nominal annual rate divided by 12.
- No withdrawals, fees, taxes, inflation, or changing rates are modeled; the entered rate is a scenario, not a live savings product offer.
- Amounts use one consistent currency, and the horizon contains whole months from zero to 100 years.
