Formula and methodology
Formula: Thickness loss = corrosion rate × exposure time; conservative rate = entered rate × (1 + margin/100); conservative years to minimum = (initial thickness − minimum thickness) ÷ conservative rate; conservative remaining thickness = max(0, initial thickness − conservative rate × exposure time).
The page turns a measured or assumed penetration rate into a transparent linear scenario. A corrosion rate is not a universal property of a metal: environment, coating, geometry, pitting, inspection method, and material condition matter. The result is a screening calculation, not a structural acceptance decision.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Initial material thickness — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Measured or assumed corrosion rate — mm/year; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Exposure period — years; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Chosen minimum remaining thickness — mm; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Rate planning margin — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial material thickness | 6 |
| Measured or assumed corrosion rate | 0.1 |
| Exposure period | 10 |
| Chosen minimum remaining thickness | 3 |
| Rate planning margin | 20 |
The nominal loss is 1.00 mm and the conservative remaining thickness is 4.80 mm; with the 20% rate margin, the chosen 3 mm minimum is reached in about 25 years.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered rate represents average uniform thickness loss in millimetres per year.
- The rate is held constant over the scenario period; acceleration, pitting, cracking, and coating breakdown are not modeled.
- The planning margin increases the rate before the conservative life calculation.
- The chosen minimum thickness is a user or engineering requirement and is not guessed by the tool.
- Remaining thickness is clamped at zero for display when the linear model crosses zero.
- The calculator does not approve pressure vessels, bridges, vehicles, buildings, tanks, or other safety-critical components; use inspection and qualified engineering review.
