Formula and methodology
Formula: estimated active kcal=body mass×distance×terrain factor.
A distance-based running estimate is easy to audit: mass, kilometres, and the optional terrain factor remain visible. The factor lets a user document a scenario without pretending that terrain has one universal correction.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Body mass — kg; minimum 20; maximum 350
- Running distance — km; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Terrain factor — minimum 0.7; maximum 1.5
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Body mass | 70 |
| Running distance | 5 |
| Terrain factor | 1 |
The base estimate is 350 kcal.
Assumptions and limits
- Distance is measured in kilometres and body mass in kilograms.
- The base estimate is approximately 1 kcal per kg per km before the entered factor.
- This is not a measured energy expenditure or a nutrition prescription.
