Formula and methodology
Formula: Sloped roof area = plan length x plan width x pitch factor x (1 + waste/100); one square = 100 square feet.
The pitch factors are geometric slope multipliers; the result is a material estimate, not a takeoff for a complex roof.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Plan length — ft; minimum 0.1; maximum 100000
- Plan width — ft; minimum 0.1; maximum 100000
- Roof pitch — 7 choices
- Waste allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 50
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Plan length | 40 |
| Plan width | 30 |
| Roof pitch | 6-12 |
| Waste allowance | 10 |
The tool reports sloped square feet, roofing squares, and nominal 33.3-square-foot bundles.
Assumptions and limits
- The roof plan is one rectangle.
- Valleys, hips, dormers, starter strips, ridge caps, and manufacturer coverage are not modeled.
