Formula and methodology
Formula: Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise/run)²); sloped roof area = plan length × plan width × multiplier; order area = sloped area × (1 + waste/100); bundles = ceil(order area / bundle coverage); shingles = bundles × shingles per bundle.
The calculator separates roof geometry from product packaging. Enter the measured plan footprint, express pitch as rise per run, then replace the coverage and bundle count with the values printed on the product you will actually buy. The 100-area-unit result is shown as a roofing-square-style comparison without forcing a feet-only input.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Roof plan length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Roof plan width — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Pitch rise — per pitch run; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Pitch run — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Coverage per bundle — square units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000000
- Shingles per bundle — minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Allowance for cuts and waste — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Roof plan length | 12 |
| Roof plan width | 8 |
| Pitch rise | 4 |
| Pitch run | 12 |
| Coverage per bundle | 33.3 |
| Shingles per bundle | 29 |
| Allowance for cuts and waste | 10 |
The sloped area is about 101.193 square units; with 10% allowance, order about 3.34 bundles, so 4 bundles or 116 shingles.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered plan length and width describe the rectangular roof footprint represented by this estimate.
- Pitch is a rise-to-run ratio; the multiplier converts the horizontal footprint to sloped surface area.
- The bundle coverage is the usable product coverage in the same square unit as the calculated roof area.
- The waste allowance is an explicit planning margin for cuts, breakage, overlaps, and layout loss; it is not a manufacturer guarantee.
- The 100-area-unit comparison is a reporting convention; local suppliers may sell by bundle, square meter, sheet, roll, or another package.
- Ridges, hips, valleys, eaves, penetrations, multiple roof planes, underlayment, fasteners, and code requirements are not designed by this arithmetic estimate.
