Formula and methodology
Formula: Pitch percent = 100 rise/run; angle = atan(rise/run); rafter length = sqrt(rise^2 + run^2).
Roof pitch is a right-triangle relationship between vertical rise and horizontal run. The result describes geometry only and does not select structural members, flashing, drainage, snow load, or code compliance.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Rise — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Horizontal run — same length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Rise | 4 |
| Horizontal run | 12 |
Pitch 33.3333%; angle 18.4349 degrees; rafter length 12.6491 units.
Assumptions and limits
- Rise and run use the same length unit.
- Run is positive and represents the horizontal projection for the selected slope.
- The roof is treated as a straight planar slope with no overhang or framing adjustment.
