Formula and methodology
Formula: Length = π × (outer diameter² − core diameter²) ÷ (4 × material thickness); layers ≈ (outer diameter − core diameter) ÷ (2 × thickness).
The calculator equates the annular cross-sectional area of a wound roll with the rectangular cross-sectional area of the unrolled material. All length inputs use the same unit, so the result has that same unit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Outer diameter — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Core diameter — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Material thickness — same length unit; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Outer diameter | 200 |
| Core diameter | 50 |
| Material thickness | 0.1 |
Material length ≈ 294,524 mm, or 294.5 m when the inputs are in millimetres.
Assumptions and limits
- The roll is circular in cross-section and tightly wound with constant thickness.
- Outer diameter is strictly greater than core diameter.
- Diameter and thickness use the same linear unit; the output length uses that unit too.
- Material stretch, compression, gaps, adhesive, telescoping, and edge damage are excluded.
- The layer count is a continuous estimate and need not be a whole number.
- The result is not a manufacturer specification, remaining-length measurement, or inventory guarantee.
