Formula and methodology
Formula: NOPAT = EBIT × (1 − tax rate); ROIC = NOPAT ÷ average invested capital.
ROIC compares after-tax operating profit with the capital invested in the business. The tax rate is an explicit visitor-supplied modeling assumption, and the page reports NOPAT and average invested capital so the result remains inspectable rather than presenting a single unexplained return.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- EBIT — currency units; minimum -1.0E+18; maximum 1.0E+18
- Tax rate assumption — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Beginning invested capital — currency units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+18
- Ending invested capital — currency units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+18
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| EBIT | 200000 |
| Tax rate assumption | 25 |
| Beginning invested capital | 1000000 |
| Ending invested capital | 1200000 |
NOPAT is 150,000, average invested capital is 1,100,000, and ROIC is about 13.6364%.
Assumptions and limits
- EBIT represents operating profit before financing costs and the tax assumption is applied to it as a simple model.
- Invested capital is defined consistently at the beginning and end dates by the user.
- This is a screening ratio, not a standardized accounting conclusion; cash, leases, goodwill, tax attributes, and nonrecurring items may require analyst-specific treatment.
