Formula and methodology
Formula: Convert dimensions to metres when needed. Compacted volume = length × width × compacted depth. Order volume = compacted volume × (1 + compaction allowance ÷ 100) × (1 + waste allowance ÷ 100). Estimated mass = order volume × entered bulk density; tonnes = mass ÷ 1,000; truckloads = ceiling(tonnes ÷ truck capacity).
The page separates the geometric compacted layer from the material ordered. Density, compaction allowance, and waste are explicit planning inputs because aggregate grading, moisture, placement method, and supplier measurement can change the quantity actually delivered.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Base length — selected dimension unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Base width — selected dimension unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Compacted layer depth — selected dimension unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Dimension unit — 2 choices
- Loose-to-compacted allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Waste and handling allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Order bulk density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Truck capacity — tonnes; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Base length | 12 |
| Base width | 4 |
| Compacted layer depth | 0.15 |
| Dimension unit | m |
| Loose-to-compacted allowance | 20 |
| Waste and handling allowance | 5 |
| Order bulk density | 1800 |
| Truck capacity | 10 |
The compacted layer is 7.2 m³; with the entered allowances the order volume is 9.072 m³, or about 16.33 tonnes and 2 ten-tonne truckloads.
Assumptions and limits
- Length, width, and depth use the selected metres or feet unit and are converted consistently.
- The entered depth describes the compacted finished layer, not the loose pile depth.
- Compaction allowance is a visitor-supplied multiplier for ordering loose material.
- Waste allowance is applied after the compaction allowance as a separate planning multiplier.
- Bulk density is entered for the material and moisture condition being ordered.
- Mass uses density multiplied by order volume and tonnes use 1,000 kilograms per tonne.
- Truckloads are rounded up and do not model partial loads, axle limits, or supplier minimums.
- Subgrade shape, crossfall, drainage, settlement, and local specification are not inferred.
- The tool does not choose a road-base material or certify structural performance.
- A site measurement and supplier or engineer review should control the final order.
