Formula and methodology
Formula: Geometric volume = length×width×depth; order volume = volume×(1+waste/100); order mass = order volume×bulk density; tonnes = kg/1,000; whole units = ceil(order mass/bag mass).
The page treats the protection layer as a rectangular first-pass quantity and keeps bulk density as an entered material property. Riprap gradation, placement, filter layers, hydraulic sizing, slope stability, and erosion design require a separate site-specific method.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Protected length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Protected width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Layer depth — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Bulk density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Extra allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Bag or unit mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Protected length | 20 |
| Protected width | 4 |
| Layer depth | 0.3 |
| Bulk density | 1600 |
| Extra allowance | 10 |
| Bag or unit mass | 25 |
Geometric volume = 24 m³; order volume = 26.4 m³; order mass = 42.24 t; whole 25 kg units = 1,690.
Assumptions and limits
- Length, width, and depth describe a uniform rectangular layer and use one length unit.
- Bulk density is the supplied loose or placed density appropriate to the material and purchasing convention.
- The allowance is a quantity-planning margin and does not select stone size, gradation, filter fabric, slope, or design discharge.
