Formula and methodology
Formula: Convert circumference to millimetres; inner diameter = circumference ÷ π; ISO-style numeric reference = circumference in millimetres − 40.
Ring labels are not universal across countries or manufacturers. This planner makes the measured circumference the primary result, derives the inside diameter, and shows the ISO-style numeric convention as a reference rather than pretending that one regional label fits every seller.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Measured inner circumference — selected unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Measurement unit — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Measured inner circumference | 54 |
| Measurement unit | mm |
Inside diameter ≈17.1887 mm; circumference =2.12598 in; ISO-style numeric reference =14.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered measurement is the ring's usable inner circumference or a carefully measured finger circumference in a consistent unit.
- The circular approximation uses diameter = circumference ÷ π and does not model oval fingers, ring thickness, or comfort fit.
- The ISO-style numeric reference is the circumference in millimetres minus 40; verify the exact standard and manufacturer tolerance when ordering.
- US, UK, Japan, and other regional labels are not inferred because conversion charts and half-size conventions vary.
- Finger size changes with temperature, time of day, swelling, and measurement technique.
- A jeweller's gauge or the exact ring's sizing instructions should decide a purchase when fit matters.
- The result is a planning estimate, not a guarantee that a ring will pass over a knuckle or feel comfortable.
- Do not measure a flexible strip under tension and present the stretched length as the finished circumference.
