Formula and methodology
Formula: c = annualContribution / 12; r = annualRate / 1200; n = 12 x years; FV = startingBalance x (1 + r)^n + c x ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r. At r = 0, FV = startingBalance + c x n.
The yearly table distinguishes new contributions from modeled growth or loss. A partial final year includes only its actual monthly deposits. This is an accumulation scenario, not a calculation of retirement adequacy, withdrawal sustainability, or pension eligibility.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Current savings — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Annual contribution budget — Divided by 12 and deposited at each monthly-end, not as a yearly lump sum.; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Hypothetical nominal annual growth rate — %; Monthly rate = nominal annual percentage / 1200. Negative values model a constant loss scenario.; minimum -50; maximum 100
- Accumulation horizon — years; Whole months only; for example, 2.5 years is 30 months. Zero returns the starting balance.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Current savings | 25000 |
| Annual contribution budget | 12000 |
| Hypothetical nominal annual growth rate | 7 |
| Accumulation horizon | 25 |
Projected balance: 953207.15; new contributions: 300000.00; growth: 628207.15.
Assumptions and limits
- The annual contribution budget is split into equal monthly-end deposits; the nominal annual rate is divided by 12 and compounded monthly.
- Contributions and returns remain constant; taxes, fees, employer matching, withdrawal rules, and inflation are not modeled. Returns are not guaranteed.
- Use one consistent currency and a whole-month horizon from zero to 100 years; this tool implies no retirement account or jurisdiction-specific contribution limit.
