Formula and methodology
Formula: Reduced mass mu = m₁m₂/(m₁+m₂); relative-motion kinetic energy = ½ mu v_relative².
For two interacting bodies whose interaction depends on their separation, the relative motion can be represented with an effective reduced mass. The center-of-mass motion is separate, so this result is not the total kinetic energy in an arbitrary laboratory frame.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Body 1 mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Body 2 mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Relative speed — m/s; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Body 1 mass | 2 |
| Body 2 mass | 3 |
| Relative speed | 4 |
Reduced mass = 1.2 kg; relative-motion kinetic energy = 9.6 J.
Assumptions and limits
- Both masses are positive and use the same unit; relative speed is a nonnegative scalar.
- The system is treated as two point bodies and the relative coordinate is the quantity of interest.
- External forces, rotation, relativity, internal structure, and center-of-mass translational energy are not modeled.
