Formula and methodology
Formula: z = (lambda_observed − lambda_rest)/lambda_rest; scale factor = 1/(1+z); low-z recession-speed approximation v ≈ cz.
The wavelength ratio identifies a redshift when the observed line is longer than its rest wavelength and a blueshift when it is shorter. The velocity output is deliberately labeled an approximation because a simple cz relation is not a general relativistic or cosmological distance model.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Rest wavelength — nm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Observed wavelength — nm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Rest wavelength | 500 |
| Observed wavelength | 550 |
Redshift z = 0.1; wavelength scale factor = 1.1; low-z speed approximation ≈ 29,979 km/s.
Assumptions and limits
- Both wavelengths describe the same identifiable spectral line and use the same unit.
- The scale factor is defined as observed wavelength divided by rest wavelength, and z must remain above −1.
- The velocity estimate is a low-redshift approximation; cosmology, peculiar velocity, gravitational shift, and spectral fitting are not modeled.
