Formula and methodology
Formula: Area = length * width; perimeter = 2(length + width); diagonal = sqrt(length^2 + width^2).
Area measures the interior surface, perimeter measures the complete outside boundary, and the diagonal measures the straight distance between opposite corners. The diagonal follows the Pythagorean theorem because adjacent rectangle sides meet at a right angle.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Length — units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Width — units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 8 |
| Width | 6 |
48 square units
Assumptions and limits
- Both side lengths are positive and use the same unit.
- All four corners are right angles; irregular quadrilaterals need different formulas.
- Area excludes no openings and includes no construction waste allowance.
