Formula and methodology
Formula: Initial momentum p = m₁v₁; recoil speed magnitude v₂ = p/m₂; recoil kinetic energy E₂ = ½m₂v₂².
This is a generic momentum-conservation model for two bodies initially at rest as a system. It exposes the idealized kinetic energy transferred to the recoiling body rather than predicting a real device or event.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Moving body mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Moving body speed — m/s; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Recoiling body mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Moving body mass | 0.008 |
| Moving body speed | 350 |
| Recoiling body mass | 4 |
Momentum = 2.8 kg·m/s; recoil speed = 0.7 m/s; recoil energy = 0.98 J.
Assumptions and limits
- The combined system starts with zero net momentum and experiences no external impulse during the exchange.
- The moving body exits with the entered speed and the recoiling body takes the opposite momentum.
- Gas losses, deformation, rotation, mounting, friction, and safety engineering are not modeled.
