Formula and methodology
Formula: Minutes = word count / words per minute; planning allowance = ceiling(minutes).
Dividing the word count by reading speed estimates uninterrupted reading time. Decimal minutes preserve the calculated value, while the planning allowance rounds up to the next whole minute. The minutes-and-seconds display rounds upward to whole seconds rather than discarding a partial second.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Word count — words; minimum 0; maximum 10000000
- Reading speed — words/min; Use a measured or appropriate rate. 240 is an illustrative default, not a personal assessment.; minimum 1; maximum 2000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Word count | 1200 |
| Reading speed | 240 |
5 minutes
Assumptions and limits
- Word count is a nonnegative whole number and reading speed is a positive whole number.
- A constant rate is assumed, without breaks, note-taking, rereading, or comprehension checks.
- Language, text difficulty, age, and reading purpose affect real speed; the default is illustrative rather than a guaranteed rate.
