Formula and methodology
Formula: Measured reading speed = words read ÷ minutes elapsed; target minutes = target words ÷ speed; words in study time = speed × study minutes; planning pages = target words ÷ words per page.
Reading speed is personal and changes with difficulty, language, familiarity, fatigue, and whether the reader is skimming or studying. This tool uses a measured sample as the starting point and keeps page count as a separate planning conversion rather than treating it as a universal reading unit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Words read — words; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Reading time — minutes; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Target reading length — words; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Available study time — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Planning words per page — words/page; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Words read | 1200 |
| Reading time | 5 |
| Target reading length | 3000 |
| Available study time | 30 |
| Planning words per page | 300 |
Measured speed =240 words/min; target time =12.5 min; 30 minutes covers 7,200 words; 3,000 words are about 10 planning pages.
Assumptions and limits
- The sample word count and elapsed time describe the same reading activity and include only the time being measured.
- The resulting words-per-minute rate is a planning estimate, not a test of intelligence, comprehension, or ability.
- Target minutes assume the same average pace continues across the target material.
- Words per page is an editable layout assumption because typography, language, formulas, images, and headings change page density.
- Comprehension, retention, accessibility needs, interruptions, note-taking, and rereading are not included in the arithmetic.
- A timed sample should use material comparable in difficulty and language to the material being planned.
- For study, reserve extra time when the goal includes recall, exercises, annotation, or discussion.
- Zero study minutes produces zero planned words, while a positive target still requires a positive measured speed.
