Formula and methodology
Formula: tau = RC; Vc(t) = Vs(1 - exp(-t/tau)); I(t) = Vs/R exp(-t/tau).
This ideal first-order RC model follows an initially uncharged capacitor after connection to a nonnegative constant-voltage source through a resistor. It reports the instantaneous charging state at the entered time.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Series resistance — ohm; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1000000000
- Capacitance — F; minimum 1.0E-15; maximum 1000000
- Source voltage — V; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Elapsed time — s; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Series resistance | 1000 |
| Capacitance | 1.0E-6 |
| Source voltage | 5 |
| Elapsed time | 0.001 |
Time constant is 0.001 s; capacitor voltage is about 3.160603 V and current is about 0.001839 A.
Assumptions and limits
- The capacitor starts uncharged and the source is an ideal DC step applied at t = 0.
- Resistance and capacitance are constant, positive SI values; elapsed time is nonnegative.
- Leakage, ESR, switch resistance, source impedance, dielectric absorption, and load effects are not modeled.
