Formula and methodology
Formula: Available floor area = length × width; required area = number of rats × entered minimum area per rat; area shortfall = max(0, required − available); height shortfall = max(0, minimum height − available height).
Welfare requirements vary with body weight, housing purpose, local guidance, and enclosure design. This checker makes the baseline editable and reports the arithmetic separately from enrichment, ventilation, social compatibility, and legal compliance.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Usable floor length — cm; minimum 0.01; maximum 100000
- Usable floor width — cm; minimum 0.01; maximum 100000
- Number of rats — rats; minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Minimum floor area per rat for this scenario — cm²/rat; minimum 0.01; maximum 100000000
- Minimum clear height for this scenario — cm; minimum 0.01; maximum 100000
- Available clear height — cm; minimum 0; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Usable floor length | 100 |
| Usable floor width | 50 |
| Number of rats | 2 |
| Minimum floor area per rat for this scenario | 400 |
| Minimum clear height for this scenario | 25 |
| Available clear height | 50 |
Available floor area = 5,000 cm²; required area = 800 cm²; area per rat = 2,500 cm² and the entered height scenario passes.
Assumptions and limits
- Length and width describe continuous usable floor area in centimetres, not the outside dimensions of a cage.
- The minimum area per rat is an entered planning baseline and is not silently presented as a worldwide rule.
- The height value is clear usable height where a rat can stand and move, not a decorative outside measurement.
- The maximum-by-area result is an arithmetic capacity and is not permission to add animals.
- Shelves count only when the applicable welfare guidance treats them as usable floor area.
- Social compatibility, enrichment, ventilation, temperature, hygiene, exercise, and escape prevention are outside the formula.
- Confirm the current animal-welfare guidance relevant to the rat’s weight, duration of housing, purpose, and country.
