Formula and methodology
Formula: Bed volume = length × width × (depth/100) in cubic meters; required purchase volume = bed volume × (1 + top-up percentage/100); bags = ceiling(required liters ÷ bag liters).
The raised-bed page starts with the rectangular volume defined by the interior dimensions and then adds only the allowance the visitor chooses. It makes the unadjusted soil volume available for comparison with bulk suppliers and converts the adjusted amount into whole bags. Bed depth, drainage, soil mix, and access width remain design decisions rather than hidden defaults.

The base bed volume is 0.864 m³ or 864 L; with a 10% allowance, order 950.4 L, which rounds to 24 bags of 40 L.
Assumptions and limits
- The bed is rectangular, open or framed, and the entered dimensions describe the volume that must be filled with the chosen soil material.
- Depth is converted from centimeters to meters before multiplying, and one cubic meter is treated as 1,000 liters.
- The top-up allowance covers settling and handling; it is not a universal recommendation for bed depth or soil composition.
