Formula and methodology
Formula: Required floor area = baseline area for up to two rabbits + max(0, rabbit count − 2) × additional area per extra rabbit; area shortfall = max(0, required area − available area); height clearance = available height − minimum height.
Rabbit housing recommendations vary by country, setting, breed, and whether the area is a permanently connected living and exercise space. This checker therefore exposes the baseline and extra-rabbit values instead of hiding one jurisdiction's number, then reports whether the entered enclosure meets that scenario.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Number of rabbits — minimum 1; maximum 1000
- Baseline area for the first two rabbits — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Additional area per rabbit above two — m²; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Minimum clear height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Available continuous floor area — m²; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Available clear height — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of rabbits | 2 |
| Baseline area for the first two rabbits | 6 |
| Additional area per rabbit above two | 0.6 |
| Minimum clear height | 1 |
| Available continuous floor area | 6 |
| Available clear height | 1 |
Two rabbits require the entered 6 m² baseline and 1 m clear height; this enclosure passes the arithmetic area and height check with zero shortfall.
Assumptions and limits
- The baseline area is applied to one or two rabbits and the additional allowance is applied to each rabbit above two.
- Available area means continuous usable floor area, not a stack of separate levels or a short exercise release.
- Clear height is measured where the rabbits can actually stand and move, excluding fixtures that reduce usable space.
- The entered welfare baseline is a planning scenario and does not replace local law, licensing rules, or species-specific advice.
- Social compatibility, shelter, flooring, enrichment, ventilation, temperature, and cleaning are not reduced to the area calculation.
- If the check fails, provide more appropriate space and seek welfare guidance before housing the animals.
