Formula and methodology
Formula: Perimeter = 2(length + width); binding length = perimeter + extra allowance; strips = ceiling(binding length ÷ usable strip length); fabric cut width = strips × strip width; unused strip length = strips × usable strip length − binding length.
The page turns a finished rectangular quilt into a binding-length estimate and rounds strips upward because a partial strip is not a complete cut. The usable strip length and allowance remain inputs: fabric width, seams, diagonal joins, corners, curves, and the chosen finishing method can change the actual cut plan.

Assumptions and limits
- The finished quilt is represented by one rectangle and the entered dimensions use compatible units.
- The extra allowance is intended for joins, corners, tails, and handling; it is not a guarantee for a particular binding technique.
- Usable strip length is the length available from each cut strip after selvedges or unusable edges are excluded.
- Each strip is cut at the same width and strips are joined to form one continuous binding run.
- The result does not choose straight-grain, crosswise, or bias binding, and it does not model curved edges.
- Seam allowance, pressing, shrinkage, fabric grain, pattern matching, and cutting waste require a separate review.
