Formula and methodology
Formula: Sort nine values; Q2=x₅; Q1=(x₂+x₃)/2; Q3=(x₇+x₈)/2; IQR=Q3-Q1.
After sorting nine values, the median is excluded when each four-value half is summarized. This explicit convention makes Q1 and Q3 reproducible for the supplied list.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value 1 | 3 |
| Value 2 | 5 |
| Value 3 | 7 |
| Value 4 | 8 |
| Value 5 | 10 |
| Value 6 | 12 |
| Value 7 | 14 |
| Value 8 | 16 |
| Value 9 | 20 |
Q1: 6; median: 10; Q3: 15; IQR: 9.
Assumptions and limits
- Exactly nine observations are supplied and equal weighting is intended.
- Quartiles use the median-of-halves convention that excludes the overall median for odd n.
- Different software quartile conventions can differ for other sample sizes, so retain the stated convention with the result.
